Chimes and echoes break the still of the morning mist -
Veils of grey cloud hang in dark blankets
Over the town and my restless thoughts.
The chilly touch of an eerie wind
Breaks my reverie and I wrap
My coat tighter around me.
An Autumn morning, leaves scatter before me as I walk -
I kick them as I trample through!
Ahead, a church, but nobody in sight -
Only me, urging my body quickly on,
To stop the shivering tendrils of the crisp, cold air.
My breath hovers in front of me,
Floating in the air like a living creature -
Gasping for a moment of life.
Thud, thud, thud go my footsteps
On the icy, grey pavement beside the cemetery.
I walk, and wonder about the souls
And spirits surrounding me.
Mine is not the only life.
Sometimes all too easy to forget,
When I feel dark and cold.
Gentle drizzle falls from the sky,
Grey clouds transforming into black opaque nightmares.
I run suddenly, attempt to reach cover.
A gargoyle statue shelters me from the rain,
Just in time as the flood of water slams to earth.
I am fortunate indeed to have the ancient stone above me.
Bells toll nearby, and my mind wanders once more:
Souls' cries echo and sparkle!
For a moment I stand transfixed,
Then I am gone!
Running towards warmth and home.
